UV Printed vs Laser Engraved — What's the Difference?

UV Printed vs Laser Engraved — What's the Difference?

Two Ways to Customize Your AR-15 Magazine

At Halstead Arms, we offer two distinct customization methods for our AR-15 PMAGs: UV printing and laser engraving. Both produce stunning results, but they work differently and have their own strengths. Here's what you need to know before you order.

Laser Engraving

Laser engraving uses a high-powered laser to permanently etch a design directly into the surface of the PMAG. The laser removes material, creating a recessed design that is part of the magazine itself.

Pros of Laser Engraving

  • Extremely durable — the design cannot peel, fade, or wear off because it's cut into the material
  • Tactile feel — you can feel the engraving with your fingertips
  • Low-profile look — clean, precise, and understated
  • Field-proven — holds up to heavy use, solvents, and harsh conditions

Cons of Laser Engraving

  • Single color (the natural color of the PMAG material beneath the surface)
  • Less contrast on darker colored magazines

UV Printing

UV printing uses ultraviolet-cured ink applied directly to the surface of the PMAG. The ink is bonded to the surface using UV light, resulting in a vibrant, full-color image.

Pros of UV Printing

  • Full color — vivid, photorealistic designs with multiple colors
  • High detail — captures fine gradients and complex artwork
  • Bold visual impact — stands out immediately
  • Great for intricate designs — flags, detailed graphics, and multi-tone artwork shine with UV printing

Cons of UV Printing

  • Surface-level application — more susceptible to wear in high-friction areas over time
  • May show wear faster than engraving under extreme field conditions

Which Should You Choose?

It comes down to your priorities:

  • Want maximum durability for hard use? Go with laser engraving.
  • Want bold color and visual impact for range days or display? Go with UV printing.
  • Can't decide? Many customers order both — one engraved for the field, one UV printed for the range.
