What Is an AR-15 Ejection Port Dust Cover?
The ejection port dust cover (also called the port door) is a small hinged panel on the right side of your AR-15 upper receiver. It keeps debris, dirt, and moisture out of the action when the rifle isn't in use, and automatically opens when you fire the first round.
At Halstead Arms, we laser engrave custom designs directly onto the dust cover — making it one of the easiest and most affordable ways to personalize your build.
What You'll Need
- Your new custom AR-15 dust cover
- The dust cover rod (usually included)
- The dust cover spring (usually included)
- A small punch or flathead screwdriver (optional)
Step-by-Step Installation
Step 1: Clear and safe your rifle
Always confirm your rifle is unloaded before beginning any work. Remove the magazine, lock the bolt back, and visually inspect the chamber.
Step 2: Remove the old dust cover (if replacing)
Use a small punch to push the hinge rod out from the left side of the receiver. The spring and cover will come free. Set them aside.
Step 3: Position the new dust cover
Align your new Halstead Arms dust cover over the ejection port opening with the hinge tabs lined up with the receiver's hinge channel.
Step 4: Insert the rod and spring
Slide the hinge rod through the right side of the receiver, through the dust cover tabs, and compress the spring as you push the rod through to the left side. The spring should seat against the receiver and apply tension to keep the cover closed.
Step 5: Test the cover
Press the dust cover closed — it should snap shut and stay closed. Press the release tab to open it. It should spring open freely.
Tips
- If the cover feels stiff, double-check the spring orientation.
- No tools are required for most installations — it's a tool-free swap on most standard AR-15 uppers.
- Installation takes under 5 minutes once you've done it once.
