How to Build a 300 Blackout AR-15 — Parts Checklist

Why Build a 300 Blackout AR-15?

The 300 Blackout (300 BLK) cartridge has become one of the most popular AR-15 calibers for good reason. It delivers excellent terminal performance at short to medium range, runs suppressed exceptionally well with subsonic loads, and best of all — it uses a standard AR-15 lower receiver and magazines. The only major change from a 5.56 build is the upper.

300 Blackout AR-15 Parts Checklist

Lower Receiver Build

  • Stripped or complete lower receiver (any mil-spec AR-15 lower works)
  • Lower parts kit (LPK) — standard mil-spec
  • Stock or brace of your choice
  • Buffer and buffer spring (carbine or pistol depending on your build)
  • Pistol grip

Upper Receiver Build

  • Stripped upper receiver
  • 300 Blackout barrel — this is the critical part; do NOT use a 5.56 barrel
  • Barrel nut and handguard of your choice
  • Gas block and gas tube (length depends on barrel)
  • Bolt carrier group (BCG) — standard 5.56/300 BLK BCG works fine
  • Charging handle
  • Muzzle device — suppressor, flash hider, or muzzle brake

Magazines

This is where 300 Blackout shines — it uses standard AR-15 magazines. No special mags required. However, many 300 BLK shooters prefer to mark their magazines clearly to avoid accidentally loading 300 BLK rounds into a 5.56 upper (which can cause a dangerous malfunction).

A custom laser engraved or UV printed 300 Blackout PMAG from Halstead Arms is a great solution — bold designs that make your 300 BLK mags instantly identifiable at the range.

Optics & Accessories

  • Optic — red dot or low-power variable optic (LPVO) recommended for 300 BLK ranges
  • Sling and sling mount
  • Light or laser (optional)
  • Suppressor (optional but highly recommended for subsonic loads)

Key Things to Know Before You Build

  • Never mix 5.56 and 300 BLK ammo — label your magazines clearly
  • Barrel length matters — supersonic loads perform best in 16"+ barrels; subsonic loads work well in shorter barrels (8"-10")
  • Gas system tuning — if running both supersonic and subsonic, an adjustable gas block is worth considering
  • Check local laws — suppressor ownership requires an NFA tax stamp and varies by state
